Built in 1917, these twin summer homes on the Long Island Sound in Madison, Conn., were created as mirror images of each other for a pair of brothers named Henry and Edward Wiener, according to documents provided by the current owner, the Schumann family. The family has used the property, which now covers 2.1 acres, as a summer retreat for more than 80 years

The matching, crescent-shaped homes, have been a part of the Schumann family ever since patriarch John J. Schumann, a former president of General Motors Acceptance Corp., now known as Ally Financial, began renting one of the twins in 1927, according to his grandson, David Schumann, who is helping the family arrange the sale of the property. John J. Schumann began acquiring the property in 1930, and by 1950, his family owned both homes, and had begun extending the property to include a year-round cottage

Over the years, the family expanded the property farther. It includes 500 feet of water frontage. David Schumann, 57, remembers visiting the family compound every summer. 'It was huge. It really felt like a magical place, because there was just so much to do, with the shoreline being right there,' he said.

'Each family got one house for a month,' Mr. Schumann recalls. With three generations coming together every year, 'you got to know all your cousins,' he said. 'It was a lot of fun.'

Even after renovations and additions, the homes are still roughly the same, Mr. Schumann says. After his grandfather extended the living room in one, his father would later make the same extension in the other. Each twin is roughly 4,475 square feet, Mr. Schumann said, though one is recorded in county records at 3,600 square feet. One of the living rooms is shown.

A master bedroom is shown. There are nine bedrooms in one twin and eight bedrooms in the other, where one of the rooms was made into a suite. There are 10 full bathrooms and four half baths.

In addition to the twins, which are used only in the summer, there is also a four-bedroom year-round cottage that the family has taken to calling the 'Schubox,' which is a play on their name. One of the matching carriage houses is shown.

Mr. Schumann says there is enough space on the property to build another home. There is also a tennis court on the grounds.

After the death of Mr. Schumann's father, Robert, in 2011, he says he and his family are ready to sell the property. 'Times have changed, and it's really not appropriate for our family now,' he said. The pool, situated between the twins, is shown.

The property was listed in March for $10 million with Margaret Muir of William Pitt Sotheby's International Realty
