"When I bought this house it was a shell. There were no doors or walls," says owner Fiona Gilmore. "I could do whatever I wanted. I worked with Rome-based architects Behbahani Hall and together we created and designed the whole thing."

"I love Behbahani Hall's sensitivity towards material," adds Ms. Gilmore. "Even though the house is very contemporary inside, we also brought in ancient stones" found near the property.

The 3,605-square-foot house has five bedrooms, all with en suite bathrooms. "All the doors and wardrobes are solid oak. The staircase is wooden and everywhere else is stone, apart from the library," Ms. Gilmore says.

Outside are lush gardens with an infinity pool and pool house.

The house, 20 kilometers from St.-Tropez and close to the local amenities of Ste.-Maxime, is listed with Savills at ¢æ3.24 million ($4.2 million.)
