The owner, Kai Hielscher, 45, purchased this property in Chicago for roughly $1.5 million in 2003, according to public records. The building was once used as a public bathhouse, according to John Russick, director of curatorial affairs at the Chicago History Museum. It was converted to a residence in the 1980s by a previous owner, Mr. Hielscher says

Inside, the 9,740-square-foot home features 18-foot ceilings, according to the listing agent's office. Mr. Hielscher calls the living room area 'the basketball stadium space,' because of its large dimensions. The bathhouse was constructed around the turn of the 20th century, Mr. Russick said, and mainly served residents without bathing facilities in their homes. It was used as a bathhouse until at least the mid 1960s, he said.

The main level is currently being leased to a small design branding company as office space. Its lease expires in March 2014, at which point the company may renegotiate another lease, or potentially relocate, said listing agent Robert John Anderson. Shown here is a view of the main living space from around 2011, according to the listing agent. The property could be used as a residence again in the future.

The home has an 'almost a museum-like feel,' says Dan Chung, president of Vessel Ideation, the design branding studio currently leasing the space. He says his firm was attracted to the building as office space because of its loft-like, open floor plan. Shown is a photo of the living room as it currently looks.

The home's kitchen includes an 'immense' skylight, the listing agent says, as well a dual-sided fireplace. The other side of the fireplace opens to the living room. Mr. Hielscher is a business consultant at major accounting firm, where he works on tax and corporate structuring. He is selling the property because he has been living abroad for work since the end of 2007.

The property includes a garden area and wooden covered deck that Mr. Hielscher says is good for social gatherings.

Another view of the garden is shown. The property was built in 1913.

The home includes three bedrooms and 3¨ö bathrooms, according to the listing agent's office. There is also a partially finished basement with an additional bedroom. This room, shown here in 2011, is now part of the office tenant's space.

The home was listed in March 2012 for $2.3 million with Robert John Anderson of Baird & Warner Real Estate
