The owner, Nancy Dine, 76, purchased a co-op apartment in this building in New York's West Village neighborhood in 1985 with her former husband, she said. The building, located on Barrow Street, was once the home, workshop and marionette theater of the late puppeteer Bil Baird, according to Andrew Berman, executive director of the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation.

Ms. Dine's unit is a floor-through apartment on the second floor of the building with a private, key-entry elevator. Mr. Baird opened a workshop and puppet theater at this location in 1966, according to Edith Blanchard, director of the Charles H. MacNider Museum in Mason City, Iowa, which houses a collection of the entertainer's puppets, including some used in 'The Sound of Music.' The space included a 193-seat auditorium, a workshop, and Mr. Baird's apartment, Ms. Blanchard said. She says he owned the six-story building until 1981.

In 1997, Ms. Dine and her son, Nick Dine, undertook a thorough renovation of the property. Before the remodel, the space was divided into several smaller rooms. 'There was no way to get the advantage of the high ceilings,' Ms. Dine said, so they tore down interior walls to create 'one giant room' that now encompasses the living, dining and kitchen areas.

The ceilings were redone with a lacquered finish to reflect even more natural light into the space. The living area, shown here, has 11¨ö -foot ceilings, according to the listing.

Mr. Dine is currently retired, but was a documentary filmmaker devoted to arts and education. Built-in bookshelves throughout the home were designed and built by her son. 'I'm an inveterate reader,' she said. The dining area, pictured in the background, includes a built-in banquette.

The entire living area gets 'blasted with afternoon light,' Ms. Dine says, which was a top priority for her during the renovation. The master bedroom, which includes a walk-in closet, is pictured.

Ms. Dine's son, who also designed the cabinetry in the master closet, was concerned that his mother's shoe collection would scuff the new wood shelving, she said. Instead, Ms. Dine placed her collection in shoe boxes with images of the shoes on the front of the boxes. The closet is 13 feet long and 6 feet wide, according to the listing agent.

The home measures about 2,100 square feet and includes two bedrooms and two full bathrooms

The study features a green toile wallpaper that Ms. Dine's grandchildren tease her about. 'It's actually very, very restful,' she says about the patterned décor. After living here for 28 years, Ms. Dine says she's ready to move on. 'I thought I had one more house in me,' she says about her decision to sell.

The apartment was listed in February for $4.45 million with Susan Silverman of Warburg Realty.
