"We completely rebuilt it," says owner Gillian Meijer, owner of this former flour mill. "The house is over 350 years old and we only left the ancient walls. It was an old bread mill in the 18th century. People would come down from the village to buy their bread down a public footpath that lead to the main entrance."

"It sits high in the valley so we get sun all day," says Ms. Meijer. "When we took it over in 2003 we made a second lake and we have a stream that goes into the second lake and then in and out again into the river so we have running water everywhere. You hear this running water. It's peaceful."

The high-spec kitchen features a large open fireplace.

There are four bedrooms, all with spacious en suite bathrooms.

The land covers 12.5 hectares and it is home to two lakes, streams regulated by locks, a boathouse and woodland. On the other side of the house, the current owners have built a north-facing wood-and-glass studio.

The house is near the town of Beaumont-Du-Périgord, in the Dordogne. The nearest airport is Bergerac, 25 minutes away. It is listed with Savills at ¢æ3.1 million ($4 million).
