The owners, Peter Kukol, 49, and Eshaia Kukol, 52, purchased this 83-acre property outside Prescott, Ariz., in 2002, according to public records. The land cost $430,000, records show. Mr. Kukol, an amateur astronomer, chose the spot to build this contemporary compound, in part, because of its stargazing potential. 'I think we just started building because it has this incredible pull,' Ms. Kukol said about the area

Combined, the main residence and detached guesthouse measure about 8,700-square-feet, according to the listing agents. 'It was supposed to be a little cottage with an observatory,' Mr. Kukol said. 'On paper, things looked so much smaller,' he joked. Despite the home's size, Ms. Kukol says it still manages to feel intimate and livable.

Inside, glass, stone and earth-toned metals form the building blocks for a 'soft' contemporary feel, Ms. Kukol said. A smoke-free fireplace in the home's entry, pictured here, is surrounded by granite and stamped copper. Stamped copper is also inlaid in a design on the glass doors, which can pivot open for an indoor-outdoor feel.

The couple didn't disclose the construction cost, but said their investment was 'significantly more' than the list price. A staircase with glass treads is shown. It leads up to a full bar, library and a room the couple call 'the cockpit' because of its expansive views.

The observatory, pictured here, is about 14 feet by 24 feet, Mr. Kukol said, and contains three high-powered telescopes and other equipment. The structure has a roll-off, retractable roof.

An image taken by equipment in Mr. Kukol's observatory is shown. He says it depicts the Andromeda galaxy. Ms. Kukol says 'dozens of galaxies' can be seen through their telescopes

Here, the two-story great room includes views of the landscape. The home is built on an east-west orientation, Ms. Kukol says, and gets plenty of natural light.

The bar above the great room is pictured. The bar features granite countertops inlaid with glass and metal, Ms. Kukol said.

Mr. Kukol formerly worked at Microsoft as a computer programmer and is currently involved in a startup in California working on a new iPhone app. Ms. Kukol retired 12 years ago from a career in medicine. A view of the kitchen and breakfast area is shown

The detached guesthouse measures about 1,440-square-feet and includes two bedrooms and two bathrooms.

The separate guest suites are nicknamed 'yin and yang,' with one suite featuring a warmer color scheme, while the other is darker. Both include kiva fireplaces, as shown here.

The other guest suite, with a matching fireplace, is pictured. Mr. Kukol, a 'Star Wars' fan, refers to the contrasting décor in the guesthouse as 'the dark side and the light side,' he wrote in an email. In all, the main home and guest quarters have five fireplaces

The home includes five bedrooms and 4¨ö bathrooms, according to the listing fact sheet. A conference room in the home is shown.

There is a roughly 70-yard-long tunnel that connects the home's parking garage spaces, the couple said. The lower garage parks about eight cars while the upper garage can hold another three. There is also ample space for parking on the grounds, as well, Ms. Kukol said.

The compound also includes an exercise room, shown here, and a heated kennel for about six dogs. Ms. Kukol says they're selling because they own several other properties, and would like to use the proceeds from the sale toward a charitable cause.

The property was first listed in December 2010 for $4.9 million, according to co-listing agent Kathleen Yamauchi. The price was increased in March 2011 to $5.5 million since furnishings are now included in the sale, she said. The property was relisted in March for $5.5 million with Ms. Yamauchi of Kathleen Yamauchi Group Real Estate and Walt Danley of Walt Danley Realty.
