This five-bedroom apartment in the North London suburb of Hampstead was one of several created when a former hospital was redeveloped the building began life as a poorhouse when it was built around 1800, says owner Roberta Wolens

"I bought my home in 2006 from the original owners who lived there for 10 years. The former hospital had been converted into terraced luxury flats and townhouses and the results were, by my reckoning, mixed," says Ms. Wolens, who was attracted to the apartment by features like the high ceilings and the old brick arches on the terrace.

Ms. Wolens hired architects Serrano Evans to refurbish the property, which spans three floors. The refurbishment "opened up the space and allowed [the architects] to create a home with visual connections between the front and the back of the house through a series of interior openings in walls," she explains.

"The kitchen is a great entertaining and family space and we use it as such," Ms. Wolens says. "It is a cook's kitchen and everything in it is designed to be out and in use or behind pocket doors that slide closed and gives the space a sense of calm."

The 3,231-square-foot apartment has three en-suite bathrooms and an en-suite shower room.

It also has a south-facing landscaped patio garden. The apartment is on sale through Aston Chase for £4.8 million ($7.5 million).
