The 4,133-square-foot, six-bedroom home—whose illustrious owners have included Sir Edward Thursfield, High Sheriff of Somerset in 1941—has five reception rooms, including a music room and a study. "The house itself is built in the Victorian Gothic style, with a fabulous clock tower with the original striking clock [by Cornelius Tyte]," Ms. Corr says.
The layout of the property "works exceptionally well," Ms. Corr says, and blends period features with modern fixtures. Its newly fitted bespoke kitchen is Victorian-style and has a slate sink, tile floors and a recess housing an oil-fired Aga.
"We were attracted to the house primarily for the stunning views across the county to Exmoor, and to tiny glimpses of the Bristol Channel in the evening," Ms. Corr says. "The views are framed by vast stone mullion windows in generously proportioned rooms." Bristol Airport is less than 30 minutes away, Wells is just a few minutes' drive and there are nearby trains to London. "It works well for the commuter life we lead," she says.
The property, which has four bathrooms, has been fully refurbished, and sits on a ¨ú-acre plot, which includes a courtyard and small apple orchard. "The garden is a tranquil, sweet-scented haven full of birdsong," Ms. Corr says. "It's a real antidote to the hustle and bustle of modern life, yet a short drive from the beautiful city of Wells, which has plenty to offer."
